Research: The role of the industrial designer in the new China

June 2003

As a preparation on my internship in China, I wrote a thesis on the role of China in industrial design. Although it is a huge country, I knew only little about its modern role in design.

To find out more about design in China, I read about the ancient and recent history of China, and found that politics have had great influence on design in China, first the empires and later communism. Only after the death of Mao Ze Dong in 1976, design education arose. Nowadays, China has a fast growing economy, and with that comes a growing interest in product development. For an industrial designer, this creates interesting opportunities.
